Teaching children to preserve and conserve the environment is of utmost importance at Kinder Haven.
We recycle our drinking water, turn lights on only as required and re-use paper and materials in our pasting and creative activities.
Outdoors, we plant and care for our vegetable gardens, watch flowers grow, build worm farms and observe the many varieties of bugs and insects in our yards. Our water tanks help to keep our grass green.
It is vital for children to develop a sense of responsibility for the environment and we use books, posters, artwork, group time and discussion to encourage a love for our planet.
Green Precinct
Moonee Valley City Council will become an Environmental Leader with its new “Green Precinct” project set to create a blueprint for sustainable projects incorporating local businesses in Victoria.
The area between Pascoe Vale Road, Mt Alexander Road and The Strand will be developed as a high profile area demonstrating best practice sustainable business activities and employee programs that concentrate on energy, water, waste, biodiversity and travel.
The Green Precinct has received $190,000 from the Victorian Government Sustainability Fund which targets partnership-based, practical projects that will help Victorians to take action for sustainability.
Kinder Haven Moonee Ponds is proud to be involved with Green Precinct, aiming for:
- A 20% reduction of 2007/08 greenhouse figures by 2010 and a carbon neutral precinct by 2020
- A reduction in 2007 potable (drinkable) water figures by 30% by 2010
- The recovery of 75% of solid waste to be reused or recycled by 2010
- Increases of at least 25% in the accredited GreenPower use by 2010*
